Frequently Asked Questions

  • Acupuncture is a key component of traditional Chinese medicine, involving the insertion of thin, sterile needles into specific acupuncture points on the body. These points lie along meridians, which are energy pathways linked to various physiological functions.

By stimulating these points, acupuncture is believed to influence the flow of neurochemicals, such as endorphins and neurotransmitters, promoting pain relief, reducing inflammation, and restoring balance.

Research suggests that acupuncture may also affect the autonomic nervous system and hormone regulation, making it effective for a wide range of health concerns.

At Wood & Water, we integrate this evidence-based approach into our holistic wellness services to enhance your overall well-being.

  • Once a needle is inserted, you may experience sensations known as “De Qi,” which can include warmth, coolness, tingling, or a slight electrical current.

Heaviness, lightness, or deep relaxation are also common.

Pain relief is likely, and you may enter a calm, meditative state, often leading to a restful "acu-nap."

After the treatment, you may feel slightly groggy, similar to waking from a nap, but you will likely feel uplifted and euphoric.

If your body has been overstimulated "wired and tired", you may feel the need to rest as your adrenals are soothed.

In cases of deep, therapeutic needling, some soreness the next day is normal as your body heals.

  • Generally, yes.

Acupuncture is associated with very few side effects, which may include heaviness, grogginess, fatigue, bruising, soreness, muscle twitching, or slight pain upon needle insertion.

Acupuncturists are highly trained to avoid sensitive areas, such as major arteries or organs.

While there have been rare cases of pneumothorax (collapsed lung) due to improper technique, this is why it’s important to see a licensed acupuncturist rather than other medical professionals.

In very rare cases, lightheadedness may lead to fainting, which can be prevented by eating before treatment, lying down during the session, and removing needles if dizziness occurs.

Fun fact: the needles are thinner than a hair and flexible and don't usually go in very far. It is safer to use thicker needles in working with large or strong muscles and these tend to go a bit deeper.

We feel that you'll be pleasantly surprised by how small they are and how it's a stimulating in good way.

  • Acupuncture treatments are cumulative, meaning their effects build over time.

Current neurological research shows that 5-6 consecutive treatments can reprogram the brain's response to pain, offering lasting relief.

Based on a survey of over 200 acupuncturists, significant changes are often observed after 8-10 treatments.

Personal & clinical experience has shown a continuous steady health improvements that evolve with the patient over time. Acupuncture is a lifestyle.

  • To ensure a comfortable experience, please have a light snack or meal before your appointment, as acupuncture can sometimes lower blood sugar.

It's best to avoid arriving overly fatigued, as the treatment will help deeply relax your body so that you able to travel home safely.

Bring a list of your current medications, including dosages.

If you are pregnant, may be pregnant, or have a pacemaker, please inform the practitioner so that appropriate acupuncture points can be selected.

The best is to wear loose, comfortable clothing for ease during your session.

  • Your comfort and privacy are our top priorities. You can remain clothed or disrobe to your level of comfort.

Most acupuncture points are accessible on the extremities, head, and neck, so disrobing is often unnecessary.

In rare cases where a point on a private area is required, it will only be done with your explicit permission and with proper draping to ensure your privacy.

There are always alternative treatment options available if you prefer.

  • According to ancient Chinese medical texts, it takes about 20 minutes for Qi to circulate through the meridians of the body. After this time, an additional 5-15 minutes may be ideal for deeper relaxation. For treatments involving emotional work, sessions typically last about 40 minutes from the time of the first needle insertion.

  • Herbal medicine is not mandatory, but it is highly encouraged.

Each herbal formula is tailored to your specific constitution and condition, complementing acupuncture by addressing the nutritional and energetic needs of your body.

While acupuncture is effective on its own, it cannot provide the physical nutrients and constituents that herbs can.

Traditional Chinese Medicine, developed over 5,000 years, includes a vast body of scientific research supporting the pharmacological effects of herbs.

  • Yes, but it’s crucial to inform your acupuncturist about all medications and supplements you’re currently taking, along with their dosages.

Acupuncturists are trained in drug-herb interactions and will ensure that nothing offered interferes with or enhances the effects of your medications.

While many Western medical practitioners may have limited knowledge of natural herbs and remedies, this doesn’t mean these treatments are ineffective.

You can always request research studies on the safety and efficacy of herbs.

Collaboration between your acupuncturist and your primary care physician is encouraged, and a complete list of herbs, including their Latin names, can be provided to your PCP upon request.

However, it’s important to note that acupuncturists are not authorized to instruct you to taper off or discontinue any medications.

  • Not currently, but we may in the future.

If you have insurance, check if you have a Health Savings Account (HSA).

We do accept Med-pay and HSA payments, as acupuncture is considered a qualified medical expense by the IRS.
